1,500 Ottoman Period Manuscripts in Algeria Thanks to TİKA
The Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA) has successfully identified, classified, repaired, and digitalized 1,500 Ottoman period manuscripts in the city of Laghouat, Algeria. This monumental project was carried out in collaboration with the Manuscript Institution of Türkiye and the Center for Research in Islamic Sciences and Civilization in Algeria. The initiative included a comprehensive training program attended by 22 academicians and experts.
Comprehensive Training Program
Throughout this program, 1,500 Ottoman-era manuscripts were meticulously cleaned, maintained, and classified. Efforts are ongoing to publish these manuscripts as a catalog, with most already digitalized. The training program concluded with a certificate ceremony attended by TİKA’s Coordinator in Algeria, Gökçen Kalkan; the Director of Konya Regional Directorate of the Manuscript Institution of Türkiye, Bekir Şahin; and the Director of the Center for Research in Islamic Sciences and Civilization in Algeria, Ahmet Binsağir.
Historical Significance and Community Impact
Kalkan highlighted the systematic destruction of manuscripts during the French occupation of Algeria. Noting the significant progress made in preserving these historical works. The project has not only unearthed numerous valuable manuscripts but also significantly raised awareness about their importance. Many individuals from various cities in Algeria have come forward with manuscripts they own, further enriching the collection.
Community and Institutional Support
Bensağir expressed gratitude for the support from TİKA, Türkiye’s Ambassador to Algeria, and the Manuscript Institution of Türkiye. He emphasized the increased awareness and contributions from the public, which have laid the groundwork for establishing a comprehensive manuscript library in Laghouat.

Şahin underscored the cultural and historical value of Laghouat’s manuscripts and expressed satisfaction with the project’s progress and the community’s enthusiastic response.
