2024-2025 Eastern Express Season Announced: A Winter Journey Through Anatolia
Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu has officially announced the new season of the touristic Eastern Express, set to begin on December 23, 2024. This iconic train journey will run from Ankara to Kars and conclude on March 2, 2025, with a return trip from Kars back to Ankara.
Since its inaugural journey on May 29, 2019, the Eastern Express has carried 71,000 passengers. This season, it is expected to host approximately 10,500 travel enthusiasts, showcasing Anatolia’s unique winter landscapes.
Schedule and Stops
For the 2024-2025 season, 60 trips are scheduled, consisting of 30 departures and 30 returns.
- Ankara to Kars: Departures on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 1:45 p.m. from the Historic Ankara Station, with extended stops in Erzincan (2.5 hours) and Erzurum (4 hours).
- Kars to Ankara: Return trips on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays at 9:05 p.m., featuring stops in İliç (3.5 hours), Divriği (2.5 hours), and Sivas (3 hours).
These extended layovers provide passengers with opportunities to explore the cultural and historical landmarks of these cities, enriching their travel experience.
A Journey Beyond Travel
Highlighting the cultural and touristic significance of the Eastern Express, Minister Uraloğlu described it as an unparalleled winter experience:
“This journey is more than transportation; it’s a cultural bridge connecting the past and the present. With breathtaking views of Anatolia and stops at historical landmarks, it offers travelers a chance to explore and immortalize the beauty of our country. For photography enthusiasts, it’s like traveling through an open-air studio.”
Introducing the Kars-Erzurum Express
In response to growing demand for the Eastern Express, the Ministry has also introduced the Kars-Erzurum Express. Operating between January 18 and February 23, 2025, this new route will include 24 trips, with a capacity of 291 passengers. Trains will run on Saturdays and Sundays, further enhancing travel options for experience the magic of Anatolia during winter.
