Balıkesir Yörük Türkmen Federasyonu Reacts Strongly to Kuruluş Osman’s Portrayal of Karesi Bey

A wave of outrage has erupted in Balıkesir as the Balıkesir Yörük Türkmen Federasyonu held a press conference at the Karesi Tomb, condemning the depiction of Karesi Bey Kara İsa in the popular historical drama Kuruluş Osman. The federation, along with civil society organizations, historians, and citizens of Balıkesir, expressed their deep dissatisfaction with the character being shown as a Byzantine collaborator.

“Karesi Bey’s Legacy Misrepresented”

Speaking at the event, Federation President Sinan Ergüven emphasized the historical inaccuracies in Kuruluş Osman:

“We are here to highlight the mistakes in the series. Karesi Beyliği joined the Ottomans peacefully and became the backbone of the Ottoman army. Even after the Battle of Ankara, Karesi Beyliği remained loyal to the Ottomans. This spirit of unity also contributed immensely during our War of Independence and the founding of the Republic.”

Sharp Criticism of Kuruluş Osman

Ergüven did not hold back his criticism of the series, stating:

“A show like Kuruluş Osman, which influences young generations, must adhere to historical facts. Portraying Karesi Bey Kara İsa, one of Balıkesir’s symbolic figures, as a traitor collaborating with Byzantium is unacceptable. This misrepresentation harms both Balıkesir’s history and the dignity of its people.”

The federation also called on the series’ writer, Mehmet Bozdağ, to correct the inaccuracies immediately.

“Historical Truth Must Not Be Sacrificed for Ratings”

Ergüven further urged producers to prioritize historical accuracy over ratings:

“We love this series, but it is essential that it respects our national values and presents history truthfully. Distorting facts for entertainment undermines our heritage.”

“It is our duty to protect the dignity of historical figures like Karesi Bey, who are intertwined with Balıkesir’s identity. Writers and producers must adopt a perspective aligned with our national values. Together, we must uphold the legacy of Turkish unity and resilience.”
